Behind the Design: Designer Q & A

Every comfort essential — whether it's a pair of pajamas or a favorite loungewear set —begins with an idea. Sometimes it's inspired by a faraway destination, a treasured quilt, or the feeling of a new season. Other times, it's the smallest details — like a perfectly placed button or adjustable straps — that transform a beautiful design into something you'll reach for night after night.

To learn more about the creative process behind our collections, we sat down with our Lead Designer, Melissa. From finding inspiration in unexpected places to sleep-testing new fabrics, here's a look behind the designs that have become known for comfort woven in.

1. Where do you find inspiration for new pajama collections?

“I first try to look at trends and things that interest me, not directly related to fashion. So, for example, vacation spots that are becoming popular. From there, I’ll delve deeper.”

2. What's always on your mood board?

Collection of fabrics.

“I always have fabrics and textures that interest me, especially ones that aren’t currently being utilized for clothing. A lot of homewares, blankets, quilts, etc.”

3. How do the seasons or holidays influence your creative process?

“I always try to allow the essence of the season or the holiday to drive my designs, while following an overarching story that feels fresh. For example, the new Chestnut Plaid colorway that we recently added to our Classic Flannel collections. It is warm and modern, yet at the same time classic.”

4. How do you choose fabrics for pajama sets? Do you select the fabric before creating the print, or does the design come first?

“Both! Sometimes I find a fabric we really like and figure out which collection I can incorporate it into. Other times I have an idea for a fabric and design the pajama first, and then I work with our tech and production team who source new fabrics.”

5. How do you design pajamas for women that are both beautiful and comfortable?

“Comfort is always at the forefront during the design process. As I come up with design ideas, I simultaneously figure out how to make the styles functional and comfortable. During the fit process, the team also works together to change things as needed to make sure things are feeling how we wanted.”

6. Is there a pajama design detail customers might not notice, but that makes a big difference?

“Having adjustable straps on camis and tanks! We generally try not to use too much hardware from a comfort perspective, but adding adjustable straps really helps the fit for each person.”

7. How do you know when a design is "finished"? Do you ever sleep test in the pajamas?

“Yes, our team sometimes sleep tests new fabrics and collections to make sure things are flattering and comfortable all night long. We knew our Cooling Collection was going to be good before we slept in it, but after we slept in it, we can’t stop raving about it.”

8. Is there a collection or print you've designed that holds a special place in your heart? Why?

“We launched a Dino Bunny print in our kids PJs this past spring. I really loved this style because it felt so on-trend!”

Designing pajamas and loungewear is about more than creating something beautiful. It's about capturing the feeling of slowing down, settling in, and making everyday moments a little more comfortable.

We hope this conversation gives you a new appreciation for the thought that goes into every one of our styles. Because the best comfort basics aren’t just something you wear around the house – they are a valuable part of quiet mornings, cozy evenings, and the moments that become your favorite memories.
